What is Linux?
Linux is a complete 32bit
operating system written by
Linus Torvalds and many others
across the Internet. It originally started out as college project however due to its popularity
soon became a complete UNIX alternative. Linux is based on a small
UNIX clone called
Minix. Which was originally created by Andy
Tanenbaum. Linux originally
lacked many features, the most significant of which was the capability to run. The first usable version was 0.0.2 which was released on
October 5 1991 since then the number of people working on Linux has grown tremendously. No one company owns
the source code to
Linux unlike other operating
systems, therefore no one company has exclusive rights to distribute it. Several different people have taken
Linux, wrapped
everything up in a neat package, and created their own distributions. Some of the most
popular distributions are Redhat,
SuSE,
Debian, Slackware.
