What is POST?

POST Stands for Power On Self Test. It consists of a number of routine tests in which various system components are tested. If POST discovers a problem a message is issued to the user. This message may be an on-screen display, a series of beeps or both as indicated here.

Error code: a two - five digit number
Error message: a brief message in English
Beep code: a series of beeps

POST includes an examination of all memory so the duration of the test varies on how much memory is installed. POST does not test printers, modems, communications adaptors and maths co-processor.
