What is Windows NT?

Windows NT (New Technology) is Microsoft's answer to UNIX. It is a fully fledged multitasking 32 bit DOS kernel re-written from scratch. It was originally released in 1994 as Windows NT 3.5 but later re-released in 1996 as Windows NT 4.0. Windows NT 3.5's interface is that of the Windows 3.1 program manager, where as with Windows NT 4.0 the interface has been updated to that of the Windows 95 explorer. Windows NT also uses a new disk filing system called NTFS which is still in use today in in windows 2000 and Windows XP.
